The Local Church
My Personal Experience with Witness Lee
I first came into contact with Witness Lee in 1963. There were several local brothers in Albuquerque who had been reading The Normal Christian Church Life by Watchman Nee and who were impressed that his vision for the Body of Christ was enlightening and according to the Scriptures. We had heard there was a co-worker of Watchman Nee on the West Coast by the name of Witness Lee. We invited Witness Lee to Albuquerque to share with us, and that began what has turned into a 36 year sweet enjoyment of the local churches.
I personally had already been through 7 denominations, and although there were many sincere and God-loving Christians in each one, I never was satisfied with what I saw, heard, and felt; and I was always looking for something more in line with what the Bible teaches, and seeking something deeper in the way of Biblical revelation and understanding. For several years I had experienced everything from fundamental, to liberal, to charismatic Christianity. But nothing was deeply satisfying until I began to listen to Witness Lee expound the scriptures and read some of his writings.
Witness Lee stayed in my home on at least three occasions, each time for several days. I have never seen any other person who fit into any circumstance or situation as well as he did. He never had a word of criticism or complaint, regardless of how many unexpected problems might arise. He was full of the Word of God and truly lived a life as a human vessel filled with Christ. He was very simple in his manner, loving in his attitude, and comforting in his counsel.
Since that first meeting in 1963, my family and I have pursued the Christian life portrayed in the Bible and exhibited and preached by both Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. We have enjoyed meeting with other Christians of like beliefs and being associated with what is generally referred to as the local churches. Although some have criticized us for our following the Lord in this way, we have never regretted or turned back to our former way of meeting. Our pursuit of the Lord for these many years has been full of life, peace and joy.
